A test during a concert

I developed this proposal after reflecting on my over ten-year-long personal experience with regard to school events and concerts, both as a student and as a teacher. Many formats and many different modalities are used in those circumstances, and I have often perceived the lack of a true objective, of a value capable of going beyond a simple show and self-celebration. Therefore, my aim was to develop an event capable of placing music in the center, making everything else – teachers, students, families - rotate around it.

An event capable of enhancing culture and of leaving not only a video-photographic trace, but a much more essential one.

In fact, I developed a school concert in reverse order, where the teachers performed the pieces, and the students and their families carried out a listening and comprehension test.

Active listening was one of the key aspects of the entire path, conducted during the year, which then culminated in a day dedicated to this lesson-concert with relevant test. The event was also characterized by a second moment in which students and musicians shared their experiences, through guided questions capable of highlighting the extraordinary potentialities of music for all human beings, even if they do not dedicate time to it due to study or work. In this stage, the students had the possibility to share what it had meant for them to experience three years of music lessons, and how the latter had helped them grow as individuals besides as young musicians. In the final part of the event, we sung some pieces all together which the students had studied in class during the three years of school.

Work tools

The elements that allowed to realize this experience were as follows:

- A major part of the curricular hours were dedicated to listening and comprehension, and each piece proposed was analyzed in depth as to melodic, harmonic and timbre aspects. We worked on chords, consonances and dissonances, repetition and variation.

- Listening tests were conducted in class and at home through software applications. In some cases, the pieces were chosen by the teacher, in others by the students through a work on music identity.

- A test was tailored to the event, capable of being carried out during the listening of the pieces. It was a written test, and the pieces of paper with the lyrics were prepared with markers and spaces suitable to the questions.

- An ensemble of musicians prepared a series of pieces to propose during the event. The level of details of the arrangements was adapted to the listening and comprehension test carried out in real time.

- A suitable space was organized for the event, with three different areas, one for the musicians, one for the students and another one for the families, so that they could all see and listen clearly.

- A sound system and acoustic instruments were used, always so as to foster a better participation in the test and following stages of the event.

Educational targets

The lesson-concert-test project had a whole range of objectives, even at different levels. First of all, it consolidated some Key Citizenship Competences of the European and Italian Framework, among which:

- Learning to learn
- Participation and cooperation
- Solving of problems in a situation

The educational objectives included the strengthening of the relationship student-school-family, sanctioned by the Co-responsibility Agreement. In fact, the final event was organized as an opportunity for cultural development for all the participants.

With regard to the specific curriculum related to the Music Lessons, we decided to work on the following objectives:

- To recognize and classify, even stylistically, the most important elements that constitute musical language.
- To know, describe and interpret works of musical art in a critical way
- To decode and use traditional notation and other writing systems
- To access the musical resources present on the Internet, and use specific software for sonorous and musical formulations.
