The project "Opera at school" was a laboratory activity structured with the specific aim to draw children closer to the world of opera in an amusing and involving way. It was based on theoretical and practical educational activities that introduced students to the culture of theater, providing them with a new communication means through which they expressed themselves. The project “Opera at school: Aida” was carried out in third-year primary school classes, and lasted for a total amount of 30 hours. It ended with a public performance in which the students staged their personal view of Verdi’ famous opera for their families.
In order to realize this Aida, the project was structured on the basis of what was available. The project basically requires a suitable space where the students can move and rehearse, and a means of musical reproduction (PC, stereo, IWB, etc.) in order to reproduce the backing tracks. Everything else (sceneries, costumes, equipment, etc.) is additional and needs to be established on the basis of availability and of the imagination of who realizes the project: versatility is the strength of the project.
The skills, goals and training objectives selected by the teacher for this experience are shown below.
The students learned how to:
. draw closer to a new musical and artistic genre, in a privileged form structured on the basis of their needs
. develop a conscious and more formal listening
. draw closer to vocal practice in a choral way and through a historically important repertoire
. draw closer to new means of expression such as dance, acting, singing
. implement the ability to manage their body, movement and space
. work in group, cooperate and respect rules
