Lab activity aimed at realizing a song against violence against women. The aims of the project concerned the prevention of and struggle against gender violence, through knowledge of oneself and others and reflection on the various forms of bullying linked to prejudices and social stereotypes. In general, the phases involved listening to and analysing the lyrics of songs, watching video clips, and workshops in creative writing, singing, and the playing of musical instruments.
The result of the creative writing workshops was the composition of the lyrics of a song entitled “True Love”. An original musical arrangement was added to the words and performed by the students with the musical instruments available to the school (keyboard, flute, guitar, violin). The evident enthusiasm and interest led to the decision to organize an event at the school on the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and a poster was created to advertise the event; moments for reflection and the reading of songs and poems were also planned, as well as a multimedia presentation with a selection of images to be screened during the performances. The work thus became a multidisciplinary experience which also involved other teachers and classes at the Institute. Preparations took place in the classroom, while the final performance took place in the school’s assembly hall, in order to accommodate a larger audience.
In the first phase of the project, an IWB and an Internet connection are required to view video clips on the theme selected, whether proposed by the teacher or chosen by the students.
It is necessary to prepare sheets to analyse and understand songs, and to use various resources such as books, magazines, and the Internet to search for information on songs on the theme of violence against women and gender stereotypes that prevail not only in music but in society in general.
The equipment required for the final event includes: loudspeakers, microphones, a mixer, a PC, and some musical instruments.
Last but not least, evaluation and self-assessment forms for the course should be provided.
The skills, goals and training objectives selected by the teacher for this experience are shown below.
The students:
- Acquire a greater awareness of their emotions and manage them in their relationships with others.
- Learn to construct their own musical identity by giving value to their experiences, the path taken, and the opportunities offered by the context.
- Access music resources on the Web.
- Get to know, can describe and interpret pieces of music and design/realize sound events which involve other artistic forms.
- Listen to and analyse pieces of music.
- Develop and compose vocal and instrumental pieces of music using both open structures and simple rhythmic/melodic sequences.
- Use vocal and/or instrumental techniques in an expressive way for well-executed performances.
