“Poème Symphonique pour 100 métronomes”: una sfida d’avanguardia

The activity, addressed to lower secondary students, was based on the use of contemporary musical forms, different from those relating to the classical-romantic production.

The educational path, addressed to first year classes, was based on a guided listening of the “Symphonic Poem for 100 metronomes” by Gyorgy Ligeti.

The privileged methodology consisted in participative and operational strategies, the use of various languages and modern IT technologies, with the aim to make the students protagonists of the musical, auditory, cognitive and emotional experience.

The propaedeutic stage was based on structuring instrumental activities with the aim to help the students become familiar with the metronome and the concepts of rhythm and musical meter.

In the “Symphonic Poem”, proposed with video-listening activities, the students identified and defined three stages: Chaos, where they rationalized the idea of a sonorous agglomerate and a variety of meters; Sonorous orbits in search of order, where they identified sonorous stratifications and accumulation; Towards nothingness, where they experienced the temporal void.

Lastly, they created an iconic score, marking the narration on a timeline and creating a PowerPoint.

Work tools

It is necessary to have:
- an IWB, preferably with Internet connection
- at least 3 mechanical metronomes
- virtual metronomes easily downloadable on the students’ mobile phones through specific applications – with the important effect of leading them to understand how to use mobile phones consciously -
- colors
- easy-to-find sonorous objects (pans, lids, sticks, etc) to be chosen with the students, so that the overall sonorous timbre results uniform

SPACES. Classroom.
The project, in its various steps, was realized without requiring the use of any particular equipment or setting up. Therefore, it is easily accessible even to teachers who may be working in school environments with limited economic and/or structural resources

DURATION: 15 hours
