The idea originated from the need to stimulate and guide students towards the exploration of an alternative communication channel, not limited exclusively to the interpretation of works written by others, but capable of leading them to make and write music. Therefore, after downloading a musical notation program on the PC, the students started to experience the creation of actual compositions for one or more instruments. Since it was not possible to perform the pieces in a concert, I decided that each composition could be a musical comment and a soundtrack of brief pre-existent videos. Therefore, we realized a film putting together all the musical pieces, each one associated to a video. Then, the students realized short films dedicated to the theme of the SHOAH, which led us to participate in a competition launched by the MIUR, “Young people remember the Shoah.” The students, absolute protagonists of the project, wrote the script, made the shootings, and interpreted the story through their acting and compositions.
The first step consisted in introducing the students to the musical notation program Finale NotePad using the IWB present in the classroom. I then drew up, along with the students, a draft score for one or more instruments, highlighting the importance of the initial and final signal, of formal coherence, with the aim to realize a piece with a meaning, reformulating the material according to the principle of the structural elements and the use of simple forms, such as canon, variation, and imitation, increase, decrease, specularity techniques. Each student installed the application, and explored and experimented timbre and melodic-harmonic combinations. Therefore, after developing the musical cells, the students thought of how to develop the material in order to build a musical phrase structurally consistent and expressive.

The students learned how to:
- identify and recognize musical instruments from their timbre
- think of music in relation to timbres and sonorous blending
- compose using a musical notation software
- imagine polyphonic, harmonic and polyrhythmic musical sequences
- identify and develop musical structures using them for composition purposes
- think of how to interpret characters, environments and stories from a musical perspective
