Minimalism experimental project

The Minimalism experimental project, dedicated to an ensemble of first grade secondary instrumentalists, has developed the ability to make visible the fundamental parameters of sound through the visual support of a video. The course offers to the group of students an instrumental educational approach based on a setting prepared by the teacher (video and score) which is able to initiate active participation of all the group members regardless of their instrumental skills, in a perspective where the "structure of sense "is represented by the visual narration, which in turn helps the students to improve their instrumental-technical skills, thanks to the graphic/sound relationship (control of frequency and dynamics, synchronization of durations) and also allows them to grasp the compositional development of the work by immersing them in a complex context.

Work tools

Setting up the learning environment requires a video projector or an IWB, music stands and a space large enough to comfortably accommodate the group of students. The video used can be downloaded from Toondra animation studio channel.

Educational purposes

The skills, goals and training objectives selected by the teacher for this experience are shown below.

GOALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPETENCES [...]
    Lower secondary school
    Production
    • Actively participating in music experiences through the execution and the interpretation of vocal and instrumental music pieces belonging to different genres and cultures.
    • Capacity to conceive and create music and multimedia messages, also though improvisation or collective elaboration processes, using also IT tools, in critical confrontation with models belonging to the musical heritage
    Reading and Writing
    • Integrating one’s own music experience with other knowledge and practices using appropriate codes and codification systems
Educational targets

The student:

  • translates the graphic sign into sound by associating duration, intensity and pitch
  • connects the information present in the piece of music with knowledge coming from other sources or other artistic forms
  • manages his/her emotional reactions during the performance
  • expresses musical ideas by relating musical scales and arpeggios to the video projection
  • expresses musical ideas by establishing a link between conventional notation and graphic signs
